Import and copy challenges

You don’t have to build every challenge by hand. You can paste a plan and let AI draft the challenges, import a JSON file, or copy challenges from another event. To draft challenges together with a schedule and info from one brief, use Start from a brief (AI setup); to copy a whole event, see Copy or clone an event. Quiz questions have their own import inside the quiz editor.

Who can do this: Org admins.

Where: Event → Content → Challenges, then Import or Copy from another event above the list.

Everything you import or copy arrives switched off. Check each one, add any missing content, then click Go live on it (see Create, edit, open and close challenges).

  1. Click Import. The Import Challenges window opens on ✦ AI (paste anything).
  2. Paste a list of challenge or game ideas in any format: a bulleted plan, a doc outline or plain text.
  3. Click Parse with AI. The next screen lists each challenge found, with its type and points.
  4. Click Back to change the text, or Import N challenges to create them.
  1. Click Import, then choose JSON file.
  2. Drop the file on the box, or click browse. When it reads correctly you see Ready to import with the number of challenges, “all created inactive”.
  3. Click Import.

The result screen shows how many were created, and lists any that were skipped with the reason.

The file must be an object with a challenges array of 1 to 200 challenges:

title Yes 1 to 255 characters.
type Yes One of the type codes below.
description No Defaults to empty.
points No Defaults to 0.
scored_per No both (default), individual or team.
requires_moderation No true or false (default). Leave it out for quizzes and games: they are always scored automatically, and a game or quiz that sets it is skipped.
result_message, result_link_label, result_link_url No The result screen words. Up to 300, 30 and 500 characters.
quiz No Quiz only. questions is a list; each question has text and 2 to 6 options, each with text and is_correct. Optional questions_per_participant and speed_bonus_max_points.
external External games: yes embed_url (required), plus optional platform_name, open_mode (embedded or browser).

A challenge is skipped, not imported, when its type is unknown, when it is a lottery (create those with Create), when it is an external game with no external block, when a game or quiz sets requires_moderation, or when it sends a config for a type that doesn’t take one or a config that doesn’t pass the game’s checks.

Imported challenges go after the event’s existing ones. A QR Scan challenge still needs its Station UID, and a game with no config still needs its content, before it can go live.

  1. Click Copy from another event.
  2. Pick the event to copy from. Events are grouped by organisation: you see every organisation your login belongs to, with Current org and This event marked. Each event shows how many challenges it has.
  3. Tick the challenges you want, or use Select all / Select none. A challenge marked Off is switched off in its own event.
  4. Click Copy N challenges.

You can copy up to 200 challenges at a time. Copies keep their content: quiz questions, game content and images come with them. They arrive after this event’s own challenges, switched off (“They’re switched off until you turn them on”), with their Opens and Closes times cleared, since those belong to the other event. A QR Scan copy has no Station UID: set one and print new codes. A challenge limited to some teams is copied open to all teams: set Visible to again.

Picking This event duplicates the chosen challenges within the same event.

The quiz editor has its own import for adding questions to one quiz.

  1. Open a quiz and, under Quiz questions, click Import questions….
  2. Choose Paste JSON or CSV file.
  3. Check the preview: it counts Valid questions and Errors, and names each question with a problem.
  4. Click Add N questions. They are added to the end of the editor’s list.
  5. Click Save Questions to keep them.

Each question needs text, at least 2 options and exactly one option marked correct. Options can’t be blank.

A list of questions. time_limit_seconds is optional.

[
{
"text": "When did Acme open its first office?",
"time_limit_seconds": 20,
"options": [
{ "text": "1998", "is_correct": true },
